Get active on the water and get in touch with nature at Sharon Woods

A beloved destination in Cincinnati is Sharon Woods—located less than 15 minutes from our apartments in Mason. The popular 730-acre park has something for everyone in the family, no matter the age. There are also reservable areas in the onsite Lakeside Lodge, as well as picnic areas and covered shelters—perfect for birthday parties or summer BBQs.

Rent a row, pedal, or pontoon boat from the boathouse that sits on the 11-acre Shrock Lake at Sharon Woods. Or you can also rent a stand-up paddleboard or bike at the same location. Prefer family-bonding while fishing? You can do that too. Sharon Lake allows catch-and-release only but you’ll be excited to reel in bluegill, bass, or catfish. In the summer months, you and the family will love spending the sunshine-filled days at the Harbor where you’ll find a snack bar, playground, water feature, and plenty of seating.

Let the kids connect with nature while playing in the 7.5-acre natural play area with off-trail exploring, tree-climbing, and playing in the mud. Or, if you’d like the kids to stay clean and dry, there’s the two-story Adventure Station Indoor Playground located in the Sharon Wood’s Sharon Centre where kids ages 2-12 are invited to play.

For parents who are looking to get their lungs pumping or just enjoy a day on the greens, Sharon Woods offers their visitors plenty of fitness and hiking trails, as well as the challenging Sharon Woods Golf Course. Visit the park’s website for more information and for upcoming family-friendly events.

Learn about interesting Ohio history at Loveland Castle

The history of Loveland Castle is a bit hazy, however, the construction of this massive piece of architecture began in 1929 by Harry Delos Andrews and is modeled to be a replica of a 16th-century castle. According to the castle’s website, “Château Laroche was built as an expression and reminder of the simple strength and rugged grandeur of the mighty men who lived when Knighthood was in flower.” In fact, it’s rumored that The King himself, Elvis Presley, made multiple offers to buy the property but was always turned down.

Now, families are welcome to come and explore the castle which has a game room where you can play chess, checkers, and puzzles, a chapel, a watchtower, and a gift shop. Outside, you and the kids can learn a little bit more about the interesting history of the property by watching a short documentary that is shown in the stable.

If you and your older kids are into spooky and haunted things, you can have fun ‘ghost-hunting’ in the castle as it’s rumored to be haunted. Or, be sure to check out the annual Scary Knight Tour. Visit Loveland Castle’s website for more detailed information and for upcoming activities.

Fun seasonal events and delicious food can be found at Summit Park

Summit Park is less than 15 minutes away from Wellington Place and a wonderful place for you and your family to connect and make some memories. Summit Park is a sprawling 130-acre park that features recreational activities, learning opportunities, and exciting year-round events for the entire gang.

The park features play areas for little ones, trails, a dog park, restaurants, and a free Observation Tower. You and your family have the option to rent bikes from 8 bike-share stations where, for as little as $1, riders can hop on a bike and explore the park for the day.

The kids will love taking in the views from the 153-feet high Observation Tower with the first observation deck at 26 feet and the second at 126 feet. You can point out views in the area like downtown Cincinnati, Mount Rumpke, and the Eiffel Tower at Kings Island. And after working up an appetite from all that fun, you can fill your bellies at The Brown Dog Cafe, Senate, Tahona Kitchen and Bar, or indulge in some ice cream at Nanny Belle’s. You’ll be sure to find something to satisfy even the pickiest eater in the family.

No matter what time of year, there is always something fun happening at Summit Park. Starting in mid-May and running through the end of September, families can peruse the Farmer’s Market where you’ll find fresh fruits and veggies from local farmers and more. During the winter months, bundle up and head out for some affordable fun at the seasonal ice skating rink or build some wintry memories by sledding.
