Basically, if you’re into art and culture, you don’t have to look far to find it.
Here’s a collection of Austin’s finest art and culture hubs that can’t be missed.
Over a century old, the Paramount Theatre is a performance venue and movie theater located in the heart of downtown Austin, less than 20 minutes away from our Hill Country apartments. Opened originally as a vaudeville house in 1915, the venue is now a space for music, comedy, and film festivals. They are currently offering many virtual shows, talks, and events. Zilker Park, 360-acres of greenery, is home to the Zilker Hillside Theater. During normal operations, the theater group hosts free performances, concerts, and events at the beloved outdoor venue. This Hillside is also host to many exciting annual events such as Shakespeare in the Park, Zilker Theatre Productions’ Summer Musical, and The South Asian New Year. The Zach Theatre has been open since 1932 and is the longest-running theater company in Texas. Known for creating intimate and engaging theater experiences for all ages, the Zach Theatre also offers online classes in a wide range of disciplines from drama acting to monologues and musical theater to improv. Art Museums and Galleries
Showcasing two unique locations, The Contemporary Austin brings incredible exhibitions, programs, and special events to Austin’s visual arts landscape. You can view modern art exhibitions in a renovated historic building at the Jones Center or explore the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at The Contemporary Austin-Laguna Gloria. Less than 10 miles away from West Lake Vistas is the Blanton Museum of Art. Known as the “primary art collection for the city of Austin,” the museum boasts over 19,000 works of art from across the ages. Art lovers will love the rotating and ever-changing schedule of exhibitions. Currently closed due to the pandemic, the Blanton Museum of Art offers 360-degree virtual exhibition tours, downloadable coloring pages, and other digital resources. Visit their website for updates.
Galleries can be found all around Austin, many with varying guidelines, rules, and hours at the moment. The Big Medium gallery showcases innovative and experimental exhibitions from local artists and the Yard Dog Art Gallery is known for featuring unconventional works from artists from all around the world, including well-known musicians. The Volcom Garden is a one-of-a-kind retail boutique as well as a full-time art gallery and music venue, and Art on 5th is one of Austin’s largest contemporary galleries at around 6,000 feet. Performing Arts Groups
Austin’s oldest performing group, founded in 1911, is the Austin Symphony Orchestra. It is a founding resident company at the Long Center along with Ballet Austin and Austin Opera.
