Looking for a new place to call home for your growing family is an exciting time. There are so many important things to consider when deciding where you’re going to live – especially when it comes to young families. School districts, the safety of the neighborhood, and onsite amenities are all standard things to consider when moving into a new apartment. But what about family fun?
When it comes to your family, you want your home to be your sanctuary. But, of course, you also want to be able to let loose and have fun with the little ones. That’s why Scofield Park should be at the top of your list.
Scofield Park is a great place to raise a growing family. Why? Not only is the local school district highly-rated, but the neighborhood is quiet, safe, and just around the corner from lots of affordable and fun family attractions.
Learn and play at Thinkery
One of the greatest ways to incorporate learning into children’s lives is through play – and Thinkery in Austin is just the place to do that. Thinkery is an interactive, educational museum for children that focuses on STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. They provide super fun, hands-on, play-focused learning for children ranging in age from newborn to 11-years-old.
Thinkery’s mission is to “create innovative learning experiences that equip and inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers.” Each exhibit in the family-centric museum revolves around educational experiences from the staff. So each time your family visits, you’ll experience something exciting and new.

Teach the young ones about Texas history at the Bullock State History Museum
Head south just 13 miles from our apartments in North Austin and you’ll reach the official history museum of the entire State of Texas – the Bullock Museum. What a perfect place to teach your children about the rich history and culture of their home state.
Bullock encourages families and young visitors to dive deep into Texas history with their wide array of family-oriented activities, exhibits, films, and workshops. When you walk through the museum, you and your family will explore three floors of exhibitions taking you back through Texas’ rich and complex history. There are also rotating exhibits that change frequently throughout the year, offering something new for you and your family to explore with each visit.
Be sure to bring the entire family on the first Sunday of every month for ‘H-E-B Free First Sundays.’ Not only is there free admission to the Bullock Museum exhibitions, but many Sundays offer family programs from 12-3 pm with performances, arts and crafts, and gallery activities.
Breathe some fresh air and get your heart pumping at Mount Bonnell
Keep your family active while getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city with a short and beautiful hike up to Mount Bonnell. Mount Bonnell is located in Covert Park and is actually the highest point in Austin at 775 feet. Although the view from the top looks quite high, the 102 stairs to the top are actually quite easy to climb. So, your entire family (and the dog!) are encouraged to visit.
Once you’re at the top, you’ll have stunning views of the Austin countryside, Colorado River, and 360 Bridge. Take a rest and have a snack at the view deck and pavilion before you head back down to the bottom. You can even pack a picnic for the family to enjoy at the top! Don’t worry about paying for parking. There is a free lot with fantastic accessibility for everyone in your family.
You’ll probably encounter a lot of tourists during the summer season but it’s just as beautiful any time of year for your family to enjoy. Plus, it’s just 10 miles southeast of Scofield Park.
Experience the deep blue sea (and more!) at the Austin Aquarium
When most people think of aquariums, they think about fish and other creatures that live underwater. And while the Austin Aquarium has sharks, jellyfish, and stingrays, they also have an abundance of other exotic animals like lemurs, kangaroo, and otter to name a few.
The Austin Aquarium encourages families and other guests to truly experience nature one-on-one by hand-feeding fish, rays, birds, and even sharks. Want more one-on-one encounters? Your family can schedule special events for birthdays and other occasions like “Sleeping with the Sharks” or octopus encounters.
An unforgettable experience that the little princess in your life might enjoy is the aquarium’s “Princess Makeover” event. Parents can bring their little princess to the park and receive hair, makeup, and a gown to wear for the entire day. What a special treat! After the makeover, your little one can show off their new look while watching the live mermaid show.
