When you’re living in Austin, you have a wealth of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Just steps away from our luxury apartments in Westlake are multiple parks, lakes, and rivers where you can catch some sun with your entire family.
Here are some of our favorite places to visit nearby our West Austin apartments – because our residents here are an active bunch who love keeping life interesting.
Lake Austin: Protected from The Elements on the Beautiful Colorado River
This reservoir represents the best of lake life in Texas. Sitting on the beautiful Colorado River, the reservoir was formed in 1939 and is one of the seven Highland Lakes in the region. In addition to being used for flood control and electrical power generation, the lake is a wonderful place to spend a weekend – with prime options for swimming, boating, fishing, and sight-seeing.
Lake Austin is a favorite location for boating especially because it’s protected from the elements. Its high cliffs offer respite from the wind, making it a well-protected alcove where people can enjoy their recreational activities without being exposed to extreme weather conditions.
When you visit, you’ll see people kayaking through the calm waters, party boats, and ski boats toting water skiers behind them. One local says, “[This is a] gorgeous lake that can be both peaceful and fun. Expect to see early morning risers take advantage of the perfectly still glassy water to barefoot water ski. Stop in at County Line or Ski Shores. Or hit up the cove to enjoy music shared with interesting company. Late at night you can enjoy bats swooping down to catch insects under the stars.”
We couldn’t have said it better!
Lake Travis: A Large Lake Dotted by Parks
Lake Travis is huge. And being a huge lake, it offers so much in the way of sunshine and good times on the water. Located on the Colorado River, Lake Travis is a popular spot for swimming, boating, fishing, and camping. Just like Lake Austin, the beautiful shoreline is hemmed by cliffs and beautiful forested hills, protecting it from the elements. On the lakeshore, there are water parks, resorts, fine dining and casual restaurants alike, hotels, and multiple green parks where families can hike, camp, throw a frisbee, and enjoy a picnic on the grass while looking out on the beautiful lake.
Emma Long Metro Park: A Staple of Austin
Emma Long Metro Park is a beautiful patch of green in West Austin that offers 12 miles of forested trails on Lake Austin. It’s a favorite place for locals to go boating, swimming, fishing, and for having picnics at their outdoor barbecue pits. It’s also a place where you can take your motorcycles and mountain bikes for off-road trails, and where you can play basketball, volleyball, or simply sit on the sandy beach while watching the swimmers in the water.
Emma Long Metro Park has been a favorite of Austin since 1984, when it was first dubbed, simply, “City Park”. It has since been renamed in honor of City Council board member Emma Long, who took great care to stimulate the parks department in the greater Austin area, making clean green spaces easily accessible for the population of Austin.
This park does charge a park entrance fee to keep the park beautiful and well-maintained, but it’s pretty cheap, at only $1 per day for walk-ins and up to $10 to park on holidays and weekends. But it’s worth the expense.
Camping at Emma Long offers pristine camp sites, whether you’re looking for a primitive camp site with no utilities or water, or if you want a premium camp site by the water for $25 per night, you’re sure to have the time of your life roasting marshmallows by the fire and sleeping under the stars.
Pets and furry friends are welcome at Emma Long, but the park asks that they remain on a leash in the designated areas, so throwing frisbee for Fido might not be your best bet here. However, your dogs might still have a wonderful time going on some good, leashed hikes with their favorite people. What we love the most about Emma Long Metro Park? It’s only 7 minutes away from our luxury apartments in West Lake!
Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve: A Wildlife Research Hub
Just 9 minutes from our West Austin apartments is the idyllic Wild Bain Wilderness preserve, which focuses on protecting the local wildlife and habitats that are home to many important animals and plants. Hosting regular environmental education for Texans of all ages, Wild Basin is also a wonderful place to enjoy nature, take in the scenery, and enjoy a good hike on a forested trail.
Wild Basin acts as a research facility for nearby St. Edwards University, and because of this, they have a robust Visitor Center. According to the St. Edward’s University website, “The Wild Basin Creative Research Center has an interpretative educational welcome center for all visitors. We regularly have K-12 classes visiting the preserve, but this center is informative and engaging for all ages. Exhibits currently on display include: microscope station, citizen science observation station, educational videos, large topographic interpretive trail map, coloring station, fauna at Wild Basin mural and a bird watching station for kids.”
Because they are a wildlife preserve, no pets are allowed at Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a nice hike for humans! Choose from your pick of multiple small trails that intersect, with the longest being only about 1.75 miles long. Visitors always mention how beautiful the waterfalls and streams are, and how much their entire families enjoyed the experience.
