Potawatomi Woods: A Natural Oasis Just Steps from our Northbrook Apartments

Potawatomi Woods is a natural oasis minutes away from our Northbrook apartments

Life is good here at Tapestry Glenview. Our luxury apartments in Glenview are close to downtown Chicago and the gorgeous lakefront of Lake Michigan. There’s always plenty to do: whether it’s swimming laps in our heated pool, lounging on the pool patio, shooting some pool in the game room with friends, or getting stretchy in our yoga studio, we’re all about living the healthy life here at our luxury Northbrook apartments.

But perhaps the most exciting part of living at our apartments in Glenview is the fact that we’re located on the cusp of Potawatomi Woods, a beautiful park featuring grassy and wooded areas, trails, picnic areas, and glistening ponds for fishing. It’s a great place to blow off some steam, to go on a jog, go fishing, or to have a picnic with the whole family.

Preserving Chicago’s Beautiful Natural Resources

Potawatomi Woods was set aside as a 114-acre nature preserve in 2000 and has since been an important protected habitat for many animal and plant species native to northern Illinois. As a portion of the Hickory Creek preservation system that spans 2,000 acres, Potawatomi Woods is home to a variety of woodland birds such as vireos and warblers and is a protected home to plant species including black ash, glade mallow, and violet cress, according to the Forest Preserve District of Will County website.

Biking or Walking the Des Plaines River Trail

Perhaps the most popular attraction at Potawatomi Woods is the bike trail, which is part of the Des Plaines River Trail, which runs from Old School County Forest to Des Plaines and spans 21.9 miles. This trail has portions that are made of asphalt, crushed stone, dirt, and gravel, so it can be bumpy at times but is generally good for riders of all skill levels. On your ride, be sure to look out for wildlife, such as deer, turtles, rabbits, and snakes, as well as keeping an eye out for other pedestrians who use the trail to bike, walk their dogs, or go on a nice afternoon jog.

No matter what time of year, you’re sure to see beautiful sites along your route. Enjoy stopping by a pond to look at the lily pads, see the woods changing colors with the seasons, beautiful fields, and farmland. On your route, you’ll see beautiful views of the Des Plaines River as well as lagoons and rolling hills. You’ll want to come back again and again!

Fishing at Potawatomi Pond

If you love taking a relaxed morning or evening to go fishing, then you’ll love the fishing at Potawatomi Pond! This 4-acre pond is kept stocked by the Forest Preserve of Cook County and is always a great place to catch Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Green Sunfish, Golden Shiner, and other game fish.

So bring along a cooler, some good bait, and your favorite fishing buddy, because this is about to become your favorite fishing spot. Along Potawatomi Pond is a beautiful view of the forest, as well as some grassy knolls on which to sit.

Enjoy a Lunch Outside at the Potawatomi Woods Picnic Grove

Sometimes it’s nice to get the whole family together, pack up your frisbees and volleyballs, and enjoy an afternoon outside with some hot dogs, potato chips, and ice-cold beers. Here at the Potawatomi Woods Picnic Grove, you can hang out in the covered picnic area which includes multiple picnic tables and grills. It’s a spacious area where you can play a round of family football, enjoy the beautiful weather, and gather around the potluck in a celebratory atmosphere.

If you work close by, this is also a great place to spend your lunch hour, if you have the time to sneak away for a while to enjoy the lovely sights and sounds of nature. Bring your lunch box, find a place in the sunshine to eat, and enjoy being able to take some time out of your day in order to slow down and appreciate your surroundings.

Your Dog Will Love Potawatomi Woods

Plenty of our residents at our luxury Northbrook apartments have dogs, as we are a dog-friendly apartment complex here in Glenview. Dogs are always welcome at Potawatomi Woods, under one condition: they must be kept on a leash! Since this is a nature preserve, it’s important to keep your dog close to you at all times so Fido doesn’t end up inadvertently ruining some of the beautiful local wildlife. But nonetheless, dogs love Potawatomi Woods, where they can go on a leashed walk with their owners and enjoy being a part of the family in the great outdoors.

What the Locals Say about Potawatomi Woods

Locals have been coming to Potawatomi Woods for years to enjoy nature and spend time with their friends and family. One local man says “I’ve been going to Potawatomi Lake for my entire life. (61 Years.) Cook County Forest Preserve was kind enough many years ago to allow radio control model boaters to use this lake.” Sounds like a great way to spend the day!

Another reviewer puts a different spin on things: “[Potawatomi Woods] is a perfect campground for a local overnighter. The way it’s tucked right in the middle of Lake and Cook County in the Des Plaines River forest preserve tract makes this campground easy for families and groups like scout troops. The Forest Preserve has made some great improvements the last few years so the amenities are actually quite nice. It’s worth checking out.”

So, if you have a scout troop or a big family that loves to camp, be sure to check out the options at Potawatomi Woods!

One local guide gets it: “Always well maintained, Potawatomi Woods has become one of my favorite public wooded spots in the area. The trails and fields are all very well maintained and there’s never a shortage of nice places to chill out and mentally decompress.”

That’s the entire reason we love Potawatomi Woods so much – it’s a beautiful natural escape where you can decompress, and it’s just steps away from our luxury Northbrook apartments.
