Safely enjoy the outdoors near our apartments in Southpark Charlotte

Residents of our Southpark Charlotte apartments are doing their best to protect their communities and loved ones by adhering to stay-at-home order during the health crisis. But just because you’re at home, doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to stay inside the entire time. Nature has been proven to increase positivity, boost mood, and improve overall well-being – and in the Queen City? There are so many gorgeous places to spend your time outside.

So, during these confusing and trying times, where is it safe to go while still safely practicing social-distancing measures? Here are a few places and ideas for you to stay busy, stay active, and get some fresh air in Charlotte.

Important rules/precautions to note:

Per the Mecklenburg County Health Department, outdoor activity is recommended as long as individuals are able to practice social/physical distancing. Guidance for several specific activities:

  • Parks and greenways are open for walk-in amenities only. Any cars that park in front of gates or in parking lots will be towed.
  • Golf is permitted on golf courses. No other businesses related to golfing, i.e. golf ranges, should be open.
  • Basketball pick-up games, tennis, and other games that involve the use of shared equipment and space are not allowed.
  • Use of playground equipment is prohibited.

Make use of the 50 miles of greenway in the Queen City

There are so many greenways scattered through Charlotte that provide the perfect opportunity to get outside while being safe and maintaining social distancing – more than 50 miles, in fact.

Briar Creek Greenway – Located less than 2 miles from our Southpark Charlotte apartments in the Briar Creek greenway. The half-mile trail links Plaza Mildwood and Merry Oaks and is the perfect place to breathe some fresh air and get your blood pumping. You’ll also have the chance of viewing wildlife like turtles or even a Great Blue Heron.

Little Sugar Creek Greenway – Closer to downtown is the Little Sugar Creek greenway. As part of a work-in-progress, the greenway will eventually feature 19 miles of trails. However, for now, it’s an ideal place for a peaceful walk outside.

McMullen Creek, Four Mile Creek, and Lower McAlpine Creek Greenways – If you’re up for a longer outdoor adventure for the day, these three greenways, south of our Southpark Charlotte apartments provide 5.8 miles of trails. Ranging from asphalt to boardwalk to gravel, you can run, bike, or stroll to your heart’s content.

Go for a run on the Rail Trail

Running along the LYNX Blue Line in South End is the Rail Trail. It’s 3.5-miles long and is the perfect destination for Charlotteans that are wanting to be outside while still feeling like you’re in the city. It’s best to visit the Rail Trail in the early morning or later evening hours to avoid crowds in order to keep at least a 6-foot distance.

Have a picnic in one of Charlotte’s many parks

With over 200 parks in the city, Charlotte is basically begging you to spend time outdoors. Thanks to all of the open green space, there are plenty of areas for you and your household to practice social-distancing, avoid crowds, all while enjoying some fresh air. Pack a picnic and head to some nearby parks for some wholesome quarantine fun.

James Boyce Park – Just under a 15-minute drive from Southpark Morrison is James Boyce Park. The 73-acre open space provides plenty of trails and picnic shelters for you to enjoy a meal al fresco.

Independence Park – Five miles away from your front door is the tranquil city escape of Independence Park. Soak in the sun while relaxing in the stone shelter, at the reflection pond, or in the rose garden.

Freedom Park – Take a stroll around Freedom Park’s 7-acre lake before unpacking your picnic basket. To make a day of it – the park even connects to the Little Sugar Creek greenway trail.

Park Road Park – The 72-acre Park Road Park is just over 5 miles away from Southpark Morrison and offers walking trails, four picnic shelters, and an 11-acre lake with pier. An idyllic scene for a quarantine picnic.
