In your search for an apartment, there is probably a checklist running through your mind. Affordable pricing? Check. Pet friendly? Check. Quiet but not too far from the fun and the party scene? Double check. Luckily for you, Scofield Park apartments near The Domain ticks all those boxes. And one of the major perks for young professionals living in the area is that Sixth Street in Austin is a quick drive away. So, after work, you can live it up for the evening, then leave all the hustle and bustle behind when you return home to your quiet oasis.
One of the many great perks about Scofield Park is that they’re located just a short 13 miles north of the popular entertainment, bar, and nightlife scene – Sixth Street. Unofficially divided into three sections, the different areas of Sixth Street each have their own vibe and character. You’re sure to find one to call your own.
West Sixth is the most low-key and ‘chill’ area on all of Sixth Street, and you’ll most likely see young professionals enjoying post-work cocktails while college kids tend to take over on the weekends. There’s a little bit of everything on West Sixth when it comes to art, food, nightlife, and music, so it’s a great area to venture to for a fun night out without having to travel too far.
Looking for a top-notch dinner before seeing a show? Check out Italic located just one block west of Congress Avenue. Offering delicious, rustic Italian food, Italic changes their menu daily. For something a little more authentically Texas, you might want to grab a bite at Hut’s Hamburgers. Serving old-fashioned Texas burgers, fries and milkshakes, Hut’s has been an Austin Tradition since 1939.
After dinner, hop over to The Dogwood and enjoy a beverage on their huge dog-friendly patio. Perfect for if you brought your furry friend with you for a night on the town. Another patio option is the large outdoor area at Parlor & Yard. You can chill out with one of their many ice-cold craft beers or get a little competitive with a game of foosball or ping pong.
Finish your night with a show at The Belmont. It’s one of the few venues on West Sixth that has an awesome backdrop for both indoor and outdoor concerts. In fact, it’s one of the only outdoor stages in downtown Austin and features some of the most well-known acts during Austin’s famous SXSW music festival.
Dirty Sixth has been dubbed the “Bourbon Street” of Austin and runs from Brazos St. then goes east to I-35. It’s noisy and it’s nocturnal and it’s definitely the party-scene of Sixth Street. But there are plenty of places that are overflowing with charm that aren’t filled with one-dollar Jell-O shots. Take Buffalo Billiards, for example. Located in a historic building on Sixth Street that was once rumored to be a brothel, Buffalo Billiards is 22,000 square feet of entertainment featuring billiard tables, pinball machines, arcade classics, and over 30 televisions. You’ll never have a dull night at this Wild West themed Sixth Street classic.
Another famous Austin burger joint is Casino El Camino Bar & Grill. Many locals say it’s the best, and it’s even been featured on the Food Network. Or if you’d prefer something a bit more ‘fancy’ check out French bistro, Chez Nous. It’s top-notch and they’re even open for lunch if you want to avoid the chaos of Sixth Street at night.
For a night of laughter, you’ll want to post up at either Esther’s Follies for some hilarious sketch comedy acts (and magic!) or The Velveeta Room for side-splitting stand-up. No matter your choice, you’ll have a smile on your face the entire time and a night full of memories. And for a stiff drink at the epitome of a dive bar, you might as well visit Dirty Dog Bar for a nightcap. A trip to Dirty Sixth wouldn’t be complete without it.
East Sixth is growing quickly and it’s known for its more eclectic crowd. However, if it’s live music, great restaurants, and fantastic bars you’re looking for – this area could be your calling. Plus, it’s extremely accessible to I-35 making it a quick commute back up north.
Grab some authentic Argentinian food before the shenanigans begin at the Buenos Aires Cafe and be sure to try their chimichurri sauce while you’re there. There’s also a speakeasy in the basement called Milonga Room offering a full-on Argentinian vibe as well as burlesque and tango shows. Craving pizza? Step outside and enjoy the insane amount of flavors offered at one of Austin’s most popular outdoor eateries – Via 313. You’ll struggle to choose which slice is best, but we recommend The Ambassador Bridge. With chopped garlic, pepperoni, sausage, and ricotta cheese, it’s a little taste of Detroit just down the street from your apartment in North Austin.
By far one of the most popular bars on East Sixth is the Shangri-La. This staple establishment is all about fun. You’ll find friendly people, a great patio, and a photo booth to entertain you. But if it’s live music you’re looking for, take it down the street to Hotel Vegas. Decorated with taxidermy and gold wallpaper, you can catch some of Austin’s best local bands here seven nights a week. After you leave, pop into Friends Bar for even more live music and energetic DJ dance parties.
