Play with the Animals at the Cosley Zoo

Just down the street from our apartments in Wheaton is the Cosley Zoo – a small, family-friendly zoo that prioritizes the education of local children through play and direct contact with animals. This 5-acre zoo features native domestic species of America, ponds and natural habitats, and a barn with livestock.

Parents and children alike love the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere at the Cosley Zoo, and they love the boundless opportunities to learn more about animals both local and exotic. This Zoo is very affordable, at only $7 a person, and all children are admitted for free. Can’t beat that!

Go Behind-the-Scenes at the Cosley Zoo

The Cosley Zoo takes a special approach to educating visitors about the animals in their care. For an extra cost, families can go behind the scenes at the Cosley Zoo, where they can get a deeper glimpse into the daily lives of animals, and how zoo keepers keep their animals in the best hands.

Go behind the scenes with the Coyote Connection, where you can visit the coyotes up close and observe a coyote training session. Kids can learn more about the important role that coyotes have in nature, and how we can co-exist safely with coyotes around Illinois.

Bobcats Backstage is another behind-the-scenes opportunity where visitors can enjoy a close-up view of these beautiful creatures, join a training session, and learn more about the role that bobcats play in their natural North American environments.

Hands-On Learning for Kids

The Cosley Zoo offers multiple opportunities for kids to dive into learning the way kids learn best: by doing! Kids of all ages will love the opportunity to feed the ducks and chickens to get a taste of rural farm life.  With the “morning chores” activity, kids can learn what it’s like to take care of animals on a farm. They can help the zoo staff feed and groom farm animals, and tend to the stalls.

Be sure to take your kids to the Discovery Station: the central hub that offers free educational programs to kids of all ages. Experience first-hand animal encounters, amphitheater presentations, and animal training sessions. More educational opportunities abound, such as the chance to learn the basics of birdwatching every winter or to become a Frog Watch USA volunteer, where kids can learn to monitor the wetlands throughout the breeding season.
