Spring Haven Farm

Who doesn’t want to hang out with adorable farm animals all day? Head over to Spring Haven Farm, less than 5 miles from our apartments in Chapel Hill to experience ‘all the fun’ of the farm with ‘none of the work,’ as they say on their website. Spend a Saturday watching baby goats gallop around before meeting and feeding pigs, cows, donkeys, and other cute animals. The farm also has a train for the kiddos as well as a craft station. Johnston Mill Nature Preserve

Immerse yourself in nature when you visit the Johnston Mill Nature Preserve, less than 4 miles from The Pointe at Chapel Hill. Sprawling over 296 acres, visitors can walk the 3.5 miles of trails amongst forests of cedar, walnut, and beech trees while taking in views of gorgeous rivers and streams. Learn about the area’s early civilizations and settlements before bird watching in the bird-abundant preserve. Weaver Street Market

Located in the heart of downtown Carrboro, the flagship Weaver Store Market is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. Adjacent to the original mill, which has been transformed into the Carr Mill Mall, you can stop in for fresh, local produce and food, or enjoy a meal from the food bar at an outdoor table on the patio. George and Julia Brumley Family Nature Preserve

Another peaceful oasis just outside the city is the Brumley Nature Preserve—just ten minutes from our apartments in Chapel Hill. Boasting 613-acres in western Orange County, visitors can walk, hike, or mountain bike the multi-use trails over varied terrain. The nature preserve is open every day from dawn until dusk. Morgan Creek Trail

Get outside and stretch your legs while walking the beautiful woodland trail and boardwalk at Morgan Creek Trail. The dog-friendly trail is an easy 2.3 miles and is moderately trafficked—ideal for any skill level. You’ll find one steep slope near the boardwalk at 0.85 miles. Morgan Creek Trail ends up connecting directly to Merrit’s Pasture open pedestrian area. View the trail map here.

Battle Park and Forest Theatre

Walk through trails in an old-growth forest on the edge of the UNC campus at Battle Park and enjoy a theater group performing at the Forest Theatre. Located less than 5 miles from our apartments in Chapel Hill, Battle Park and Forest Theatre are unique places to get away from the city while still being in the city. Spread out over 93-acres and varied, sometimes challenging, terrain, this serene piece of nature is managed by North Carolina Botanical Garden. Bolin Creek Trail

Visitors at Bolin Creek Trail will enjoy a casual walk or jog through meadow and wooded floodplain. The trail is 10-feet wide and fully paved, making for a perfect, peaceful nature walk to start your morning. The Bolin Creek Trail connects to Community Center Park and the Battle Branch Trail. Lavender Oaks Farm

When lavender season starts in May, you’ll definitely want to head over to Lavender Oaks Farm. Every year, residents and tourists flock to the heavenly-scented and gorgeous lavender fields to smell, see, and harvest the blooming lavender. Open May through August, visitors can tour the farm, experience culinary lavender dinners, and learn something new at a workshop.
