Here are some of our favorite local businesses just a stone’s throw from our Highlands Apartments in Louisville – inspired by the people who make Louisville special.

Block Party Handmade Boutique

All items are handmade here at Block Party Handmade Boutique. When you first come here, you’ll fall in love with the off-beat, quirky homewares and accessories. But the most special thing about Block Party is that there’s no other retail space in Louisville like it.

“Block Party is unique to other retail stores in Louisville,” they say on their blog, “We operate on micro-rental agreements as opposed to just consignment and artists work co-op hours in the store. There is a great sense of community and ownership among our artists.”

Here, you can purchase one-of-a-kind art, décor, and gifts, and meet the artists who made it. Block Party feels more like an arts market than a boutique, offering up fun vibes and a creative flair.

Block Party opened in 2013 after local artist Mary Levinsky had a vision for bringing together local artists to create a community space and retail location for local artists and entrepreneurs. “Block party is my dream shop,” she tells Leo Weekly, “We sell what I think are the cutest things in the world, handmade by independent artists. I like to travel and really research to find very unique items, and love creating relationships and a community for artists.”

Rebecca’s Wedding Boutique

If you’re getting married in Louisville, chances are, you’ll fall in love all over again at Rebecca’s Wedding Boutique. Boasting a gorgeous, newly-renovated store on Clover Lane, Rebecca’s Wedding Boutique features more than 300 designer wedding dresses of all styles, a fabulous selection of bridesmaid’s dresses, and gorgeous inspiration for Louisville brides.

What we love the most about Rebecca’s Wedding Boutique? They’re a family business that’s been a staple of Louisville for 30 years. Rebecca, the owner, started the shop when she was 27 years old, and now her daughters Alex and Sam, and her sister Karen all work together in the boutique, creating the best possible atmosphere for brides.

“I love seeing a bride’s face when she tries on that perfect dress and knows this is the one she wants to marry the love of her life in!” says owner Rebecca.

Her daughter Alex chips in: “As Rebecca’s daughter, this business is in my blood! I grew up in the store, crawling around collecting loose beads, sketching my dream dresses, and watching my mom and her staff help so many women feel beautiful.”

Slay Boutique

If you need clothes that give you confidence and style, look no further than the eye-catching collection at Slay Boutique. Offering up fashionable shoes, dresses, swimwear, and denim, Slay Boutique is meant to bring a sense of empowerment to women of all body types. The owner, Bobbie Baker, was inspired to bring her love of fashion to life after coming from modest beginnings.

“I feel that women who feel great about themselves and are dressed well can achieve and slay any obstacle in their way,” says the owner on the Slay Boutique website, “I also believe that every woman needs timeless pieces in their closet and every woman wants to look effortlessly fabulous.”

Awakenings Boutique

When she was 37 years old, Heidi Fuller was diagnosed with Stage 3 Uterine Cancer. After losing her hair and hunting for wigs, she decided that the world needed a boutique that actually gave cancer survivors the customer service and support they actually needed. This inspired her to open Awakenings Boutique, where women going through cancer can go to look and feel beautiful.

“I started thinking that there has to be a better place for cancer patients where they can get a wig or items that can help them with surgery,” she tells Style Blueprint, “I wanted a place that helps them with their own storms – whether it’s against cancer or something else they’re facing.”

Awakenings Boutique is a warm, friendly place where women can get their new gorgeous locks, as well as other products that help patients healing from cancer, including essential oils, skincare products, hair toppers, and of course, the emotional support of someone who’s been there.

Peace of the Earth

It’s a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together, and such is the case for Leslie Bowers, who realized that her first love was making small batch soaps that combined her love for chemistry, sustainability, and gorgeous scents! Peace of the Earth is all about eco-friendly products, borne from Bowers’ love of “naturally sourced materials, often local and organic, and eco-friendly packaging,” according to their website. So if you’re looking for eco-friendly products or just a great gift idea, be sure to explore the adorable little shop Peace of the Earth.

“I wanted to do something that I enjoyed,” says owner Leslie Bowers to Kentucky Educational Television, “I already enjoyed baking, but I was also very into treading lightly on the Earth and living an eco-friendly lifestyle so it was kind of a fusion of the two passions.”
