From Fruit Stand to Supermarket

Like many food markets, Dorothy Lane Market grew from humble beginnings. Frank Sakada and Calvin Mayne launched a fruit stand in 1948 called Dorothy Lane Market, at the corner of Far Hills Avenue and Dorothy Lane. Flash forward to today, and Dorothy Lane Market has grown to three well-known gourmet supermarkets in Dayton.

Since those early days, Dorothy Lane Market has operated as a community-based market. Calvin’s wife, Vera Mayne, set the foundation and launched the Good Neighbor Program, which has given more than one million dollars to charity over the years. Vera also coined the mantra for the market, “Always do the right thing.”

Dorothy Lane Market has sustained its family-owned founding and continues to be locally owned and operated by Calvin and Vera Mayne’s descendants.

With stores in Washington Square, Oakwood, and Springboro, residents in those areas have the distinct pleasure of stepping foot into a Dorothy Lane Market. Making DLM a regular supermarket for you is one of the many pleasures of renting one of our apartments in Miamisburg, right down the street from the Springboro location.

Healthy Living: The younger descendants of Frank and Calvin have introduced a ‘healthy living’ mission to the market. The Healthy Living department focuses on mind, body and general wellness, and the department offers top quality supplements with naturally and organically sourced ingredients, gluten-free foods, and much more.

Love Cakes by DLM: DLM makes specialty designed cakes from only the finest ingredients. For you, this means adding the perfect cake to lifelong memories of any special occasion.

Meat: Meat is often the main attraction of a meal, and the DLM meat department offers only the best chicken, turkey, beef, pork, lamb, heavenly ham, and so much more. All DLM meats are antibiotic and hormone free and fed a 100% vegetarian diet. They do this because, as Vera said, “It’s the right thing to do.”

Produce: The Produce department offers only certified organic foods, which means DLM has gone through a lengthy process to find only the very best. They offer more than 250 items that are certified organic and non-GMO.

Seafood: The DLM seafood department boasts “fresh catch”, and they mean it. Their seafood spends the least amount of time out of the water, which means only the freshest seafood for patrons. DLM only buys the best, straight from the fishing co-ops.
