A brief history of Krog Street Market

The history of Krog Street Market is quite an interesting one. The warehouse, first constructed in the 1889, was used to store cast-iron stoves made by the very successful Atlanta Stove Works. The company quickly grew to be a multi-million dollar company by the 1960s and employed over 500 people. In 1987, The Atlanta Stove Works closed its doors after nearly a century of business.

The building sat vacant for a while and was briefly turned into a multi-use space with offices and small restaurants. Then, in 2006, Tyler Perry purchased the land for a rumored $7 million and in 2008, opened Tyler Perry Studios. The actor/director/producer would go on to make 16 movies, 14 stage plays, and 5 television programs in the historic 200,000 square-foot space.

In 2012, developers and investors began talks of Krog Street Market – an ‘epicurean center’. The building was purchased by Pace Properties in October and the first retailers were announced in 2013. Just one year later, Krog Street Market opened its doors to the public and revolutionized the way Atlantans dine.

A year after its opening, the Krog Street Market was already named one of ‘The World’s Best Food Halls’ by Travel + Leisure in 2015. Over the next few years, Krog Street Market would go one to be named as one of the Top 10 Food Halls in America, Best Bars in America, Best New Restaurants, Best of Atlanta, and its eateries have earned multiple James Beard Foundation nominations.

As for its future? Krog Street Market continues to be a favorite go-to destination for the city of Atlanta.
