Notable research and discoveries

The Ohio State College of Medicine boasts years of award-winning breakthrough research and discoveries. Starting with the development of dobutamine, a revolutionary drug treatment to help heart failure, Ohio State went on to become the first medical center in the United States to complete a heart bypass surgery using minimally-invasive robotics technology.

In 2000, two Ohio State graduates discovered a gene that plays a role in acute myeloid leukemia. And in 2009, scientists at OSU were the first to observe an enzyme that helps with understanding the molecular basis for cancer and other diseases.

Ohio State Wexner Medical Center

Medical students at The Ohio State College of Medicine learn at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center – one of the most comprehensive health sciences and academic medical centers in the country. The renowned medical center is home to seven hospitals and more than a dozen affiliated research centers, providing care to more than 64,000 inpatients and 635,000 outpatients annually. The hospitals include:

  • University Hospital and East Hospital, the medical center’s two full-service hospitals
  • Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, dedicated to the study, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases
  • James Cancer Hospital, one of the nation’s premier centers for the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer.
  • Harding Hospital, an inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospital
  • Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital, one of America’s best rehabilitation centers
  • The Brain and Spine Hospital, with specialized units for stroke care, neurotrauma and traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and spine surgery, epilepsy, chronic pain, acute rehabilitation and neurosurgery

“In addition, there’s a unified physician practice, representing more than 1,200 preeminent physicians, and a network of community-based primary and subspecialty care facilities that manage more than a million patient visits each year,” states their annual report.

In 2019, The Ohio State Wexner Medical center was ranked on the U.S. News & World
Report’s “Best Hospitals” list for the 27th year in a row. Their highest ranking specialty was the Ear, Nose and Throat program which is ranked third in the country. Other rankings for departments and research at the medical center were #20 for cancer, #36 for diabetes and endocrinology, and #40 in nephrology. Seven specialties that were recognized as high performing include cardiology & heart surgery, geriatrics, pulmonology, gastroenterology, neurology, urology, and rehabilitation.

Improving the future of transplants

One of the most notable research efforts at The Ohio State College of Medicine are those conducted at the Comprehensive Transplant Center. More than 10,000 transplant surgeries have been performed at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center – an impressive milestone that is reached by less than 10% of the country’s transplant centers.

Since 1967, Ohio State’s Comprehensive Transplant Center has cared for patients with diseases of the lungs, heart, kidney, pancreas, and liver. Already ranked 9th by volume in the United States, the 125 physicians, nurses and staff involved in the program hope to increase their volume even more.

Ohio State is fighting the opioid crisis

The Ohio State University College of Medicine received a $65.9 million federal research grant that will fund a consortium of academic, state, and community partners dedicated to reducing opioid deaths by 40% within the next three years. Sadly, Ohio has the second-largest number of opioid deaths in the country. However, this positions The Ohio State College of Medicine to provide leadership, insights and implementation strategies to help make positive changes in the community, the state, and the country.

Robotics are Ohio State’s strong suit

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is well-known for its firsts when it comes to breakthroughs in robotic surgery. Randall Wolf and Robert Michler were the first in the country to perform a robotically-assisted heart bypass surgery in 1999. Ten years later, under the direction of Michler, the medical center became the first in North America to use the da Vinci HS SI robot during surgery. That same year, Ohio State was the first to demonstrate robotic kidney surgery with a single incision.
