A Brief History of the Cincinnati Zoo

The Cincinnati Zoo has been around a while, as it’s the second-oldest zoo in the United States, opening just 14 months after the Philadelphia Zoo, which opened in 1874. The founders of the zoo were German immigrants, like many families in Cincinnati at the time, and so the first guide book about the zoo was published in German in 1876. Ever since, it’s been beloved by many who travelled from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and other parts of Ohio to learn about animals with their children, and it remains a staple of Cincinnati to this day.

The Cincinnati Zoo Today: Fun and Learning for the Whole Family

There’s plenty to learn and do at the Cincinnati Zoo. Visitors can explore the animals of Africa by visiting Hippo Cove, where they can study Hippos in their underwater viewing area and interactive play area. You can experience an African Safari, where you can see the beautiful animals of Africa up close and personal. Enjoy some refreshments at Base Camp Café, an African-themed restaurant with an expansive deck overlooking the beautiful animal habitats. Here in Africa, enjoy learning about lions, meerkats, giraffes, cheetahs, and many more stunning animals!

Visitors can also explore the Reptile House, where they’ll come face to face with some creepy crawlers like snakes, frogs, and alligators. The Reptile House is a National Historic Landmark, as it’s the oldest zoo building in the United States, built in 1875.

While you’re here, be sure to visit Wolf Woods, where, according to the Cincinnati Zoo website, you can learn about “conservation efforts that are restoring North American habitats and the species that inhabit them”, including “Ohio woodlands and its species”. You can learn about the conservation efforts to protect the beautiful Mexican gray wolf, which is native to the southwestern United States.

If you’re ready to get chilly, be sure to check out Kroger Lands of the Arctic, where you can hang out with some Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes. Or hit up Jungle Trails, where you can learn about life near the equator, and the monkeys, lemurs, and orangutans that call the rainforest home.

The Newport Aquarium: Learn About Life Underwater!

The Newport Aquarium is technically in Kentucky – right across the Ohio river from beautiful Cincinnati. Here, you can enjoy 70 exhibits and 14 galleries, where you can immerse yourself in life under the seas.

Let your imagination soar with their multiple educational exhibits. According to the Newport Aquarium Website, you can “Discover the wonder of the shape-shifting, color-changing Giant Pacific Octopus and experience the mystery of his volcanic underwater world” at Ring of Fire: World of the Octopus.  Learn everything there is to know about seahorses with their “Unbridled Fun” exhibit, where you can also experience sea dragons, razorfish, pipefish, and more.

For kids who love to explore the world with their hands, Stingray Hideaway allows guests to experience stingrays up close by touching two different types of stingrays in a kid-friendly environment. Kids will love this tropical island paradise, where colorful fish swim around, and reptiles sun themselves above the water.

And there’s so much more! Enjoy the penguins, immerse yourself in the vibrant colors and natural splendor of a coral reef as you pass through the Newport Aquarium’s many acrylic underwater tunnels, learn about American Alligators, and say hello to a shark up close!

What’s New at the Newport Aquarium

The Newport Aquarium is dedicated to a constant spirit of improvement, and in 2019 they’re unveiling their newest exhibit, called “Freshwater Falls”, where visitors can learn all about freshwater fish in the Midwest and beyond, complete with a waterfall, a stream, and a glimpse of life beneath the falls.

Kids will also love Jim Henson’s Splash and Bubbles Reeftown Adventure, where kids can learn about undersea life by rolling up their sleeves and getting involved in crafts, hands-on games, and by feeling like little fishies themselves!
