The Research Triangle: Three Major Research Universities Near Our Durham Apartments

Here at our apartments in Durham, you’ll soon come to realize that the quality of life here is on another level. Maybe it’s because we’re located near every major school, business, and shopping venue. Maybe it’s because of our spacious floor plans and luxury accommodations, such as our outdoor lounge area and resort-style swimming pool. But we think it goes deeper than that.

The reason for the incredible economy around Durham? A little place we like to call The Research Triangle: home of more than 200 innovative companies that change the world and workplace for some of the brightest minds in the country – just a step away from our Durham apartments.

Research Triangle Park: Home of Numerous Tech Companies

Research Triangle Park (RTP), is a 7,000-acre research park that connects Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh, and is home to over 200 companies, big and small. These companies include Fidelity, Fujifilm, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, GlaxoSmithKline, Bayer, Lenovo, Cisco, and many more.

Research Triangle Park was founded in 1959 to avoid the “Brain Drain” that was happening in the area – when bright and recent graduates of the local universities would go take jobs in other cities. The research triangle promised job growth, stimulation of the North Carolina economy, and to garner more support for the three local research universities. IBM was the first company on the scene, and the triangle eventually swelled to employ more than 50,000 workers, making them the largest research park in the country.

Throughout the years, the RTP has contributed many brilliant ideas to the world, including everything from life-saving HIV drugs to the UPC barcode, as well as 3,200 other inventions currently in patents.

Why is the research triangle of North Carolina such an amazing place to live? For starters, it’s safe, beautiful, and offers laid-back lifestyle activities, whether you’re down for a craft beer or a nice bike ride through the trees. What’s more, we’re smart here! Over 50% of the population here has a college degree, and more than 8,500 students graduate annually from the region’s top research universities, such as Duke University, NC State, and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And since there would be no Research Triangle without our fantastic local universities, it’s time to dive into the heart and soul of what makes the Research Triangle so effective: the local universities.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

It might be a little challenging to get accepted into UNC at Chapel Hill, as they only accept 27 percent of applicants, but the effort would be well worth it. Located right here in Chapel Hill just a 15-minute drive from our luxury apartments, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill opened their doors in 1795, becoming the first public university in the United States.

According to Collegeconsensus.com, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is currently ranked 27th among the top 500 research universities in the entire world and is ranked the 9th best public university in the United States. What’s more, they’re celebrated as having one of the nation’s most “strong and diverse” student bodies.

Duke University

The name “Duke University” brings with it an air of prestige, and for good reason. Duke University features more than 30 research facilities that conduct ongoing research, including the Duke Cancer Institute, the Duke Center for Human Genetics, the Duke Translational Medicine Institute, Duke Center for AIDS Research, and the Duke Human Vaccine Institute. Duke University is ranked among the best in the nation, and students enjoy their gracious 9,000-acre campus in Durham, which is less than 20 minutes away from our apartments in Chapel Hill.

According to Bestcollegereviews.org, Duke University is proud to run their student-run science journal, called “The Duke Science Review”, which includes original articles from undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. This way, students get a taste of the STEM field and find their own voice in the research world.

Duke University “Embraces openness in the pursuit of knowledge”, and encourages each student to get involved in service outreach both at home and abroad. This creates involved global citizens, primed to make an impact.

North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University, affectionately known as NC State, is one of America’s major public research universities. Undergraduates are invited to participate in a dizzying number of research opportunities, including going on archeological digs, designing new ways to manage wildlife and plant populations, studying ancestral lineages using modern genetics tools, and finding ways to grow more food on less land, and more, according to Bestcollegereviews.org.

What’s more, undergraduates who decide to participate in research get their very own mentor, ensuring that the researchers of the future are fully supported in their quests for knowledge.

NC State offers no fewer than 106 bachelor’s degrees, 104 master’s degrees, 61 doctoral degrees, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, positioning themselves as a behemoth in higher education and contributing some of America’s brightest minds in North Carolina and beyond.
